Temperament Overview
Bronco is known for his deep, very hard bites that will punish the helper with bite bar compression. He has very strong nerves and excellent character. He works the helper in strong fight drive and aims for maximum physical contact when hitting on a courage test.
He is very clear, takes corrections well, and learns very quickly anything that will get him paid with a bite or ball. Will keep working in high drive as long as required. He will perform a dozen rapid guard/bite/drive/out repetitions in a row with the last bite as hard and fast as the first. His high intelligence can be a challenge to overcome in training as he quickly learns to read and anticipate training scenarios. Handler and helper have sometimes had to speak in code around him to maintain the element of surprise in high-control scenarios.
High prey drive. Works OB for a ball or tug and stays in drive for it. Has never required food rewards. He would rather work than eat, and has demonstrated that he will ignore a raw beef roast on the ground near where he had recently seen a tug. He will chase and retrieve a ball directly to handler tirelessly, with no loss of drive as he ages
He’s a serious and focused slow methodical tracker with a deep nose. He’ll keep working with his nose down to find a lost track.
Bronco is reserved with strangers and is strongly defensive of home and property. He is a quiet stalker, not an alarmist. He is calm and tolerant around family and children, but does not seek affection. His sole focus around people is to find ways to get paid with a tug.
CD-I: This is a suburban sport dog who has never seen the target before in his life. He performed instantly, took off like a rocket, took 325 pounds of punishment in stride and finished the job in 30 seconds. He was a warrior. See the video.
